(Vol. X No. 2/Vol. XI No. 1): Fall 2002/Spring 2003
From The Editors: In this issue, our book review section continues to expand, both as a resource for scholars and as a forum for less specialized readers to explore the field of Middle East studies and its diverse intersections with other academic disciplines. This issue contains 32 book reviews, including seven review essays, offering insightful analyses of new publications in the fields of history, anthropology, politics, international relations, religion, art history, literary criticism, and cultural studies. Among the books under review are new translations of literature from Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, and Morocco. In addition we are very pleased to offer a new feature, a dialogue between two writers, in this instance stemming from the publication of Oz Shelach's novel Picnic Grounds. In this conversation, poet, translator, critic, and scholar Ammiel Alcalay talks with Shelach about the relationship of language to power in Israel, and Shelach's decision to begin writing in English. We encourage our readers to take a look at our available "Books for Review" section (p. 249) . . . [read more] |
